How To Change a Tyre

Experiencing a tyre blowout can be frightening – make sure you are in a safe place and a calm state before following our advice on how to change a tyre. What equipment do you need? Apart from the spare wheel, you will need the following: *Wheel Spanner – for removing the wheel nuts *Jack – for lifting the car off the ground *Wheel chock – to stop the car from rolling when jacked up (bricks can be used instead) *Wheel nut key – if locking nuts are fitted *Car handbook – for reference (e.g., on jacking points) It may also be useful to carry: *Torch – for working at night (check batteries regularly) *Gloves – wheels will be dirty *Reflective jacket – to make you visible *Warning triangle – to alert other drivers to a hazard/obstruction *Short plank of wood – as a flat surface to steady the jack *Tyre pressure gauge – for checking the new tyre is fully inflated 1. Prepare the car Apply the handbrake and remove all passengers from the car. Take the spare wheel and necessary tools out of the boot. 2. Position the wheel chocks Chocks prevent the car from rolling while jacked up. Position a chock on the opposite wheel to the one with a puncture. For example, if your left-front tyre has a puncture, put a chock behind the right-rear wheel. If your left-rear tyre is flat, you need a chock in front of the right-front. Use chocks for both front/rear wheels (as appropriate) if you have them. Bricks or large rocks can do the same job if you do not have a dedicated chock. 3. Loosen the wheel nuts It’s easier – and safer – to do this while the car is on the ground. You may need to lever off a plastic wheel trim first. Turn the wheel wrench anti-clockwise and loosen the nuts to the point where they can be turned by hand (be warned – they may be tough to loosen). However, do not remove them completely yet. 4. Jack the car up All cars have dedicated jacking points – consult your handbook to see where these are. Aim to position the jack at the side of the car, close to the punctured wheel. Placing a small plank of wood under the jack will help keep it stable. Raise the car slowly until the flat tyre is 10-15cm off the ground. 5. Remove the flat tyre Fully loosen and remove the wheel nuts, then gently pull the tyre towards you until it comes free. Place it flat on the ground. 6. Mount the spare wheel Slide the spare wheel onto the protruding hub bolts, or in line with the wheel nut slots (warning: it’s heavy to lift it off the ground to do this). Replace the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand. 7. Lower the car and tighten the bolts Use the jack to drop the car down slightly, so that the spare tyre is in contact with the ground. Now use the wrench to fully tighten the wheel nuts. 8. Fully lower the car Bring the car fully down to earth and remove the jack. Consider giving the wheel nuts a final check for tightness. Stow the jack and the other tyre in the boot, along with the rest of your equipment. Note: if your car has a space saver, the old wheel will take up more space in the boot. 9. Check the spare tyre pressure If you have one, use a tyre pressure gauge to check the spare wheel is fully inflated. Alternatively, drive carefully to a petrol station and use the gauge there. Pump up the tyre to the recommended pressure – as detailed in the handbook – if necessary. 10. Take your punctured tyre for repair Visit a garage or tyre fitters at the first opportunity and give them your punctured wheel. They will advise whether to repair or replace it. Do not drive on a space-saver spare wheel for longer than is strictly necessary – they are only intended for emergencies. Feeling Drained? Here is how to jumpstart a vehicle with a battery booster pack

It can be a great plan to keep a vehicle battery booster pack in your vehicle. That way, you can jump start your battery even if you can’t get another vehicle to help you.

Before you proceed, make sure:

  • The vehicle battery does not look damaged and isn’t leaking.
  • You’ve taken off any metal accessories and removed dangling clothing like a tie or scarf.

Steps to using a vehicle battery booster

1. Check the battery booster

  • Make sure the packs fully charged
  • Put the battery booster pack somewhere stable. Don’t put it on the engine as it might fall off when the engine starts.

2. Connect the red jump lead

  • Connect the red positive (+) jump lead from the battery pack to the positive (+) terminal of the vehicle battery.

3. Connect the black jump lead

  • Connect the black negative (-) jump lead to an earthing point on your vehicle. Unpainted metal on the engine block or vin is the best.

4. Switch on the pack

  • Once the battery packs connected, switch on the pack.

5. Try to start the vehicle

  • Try to proceed your vehicle by turning the key in the ignition.
  • If it does not start after a few tries, there’s probably a more serious problem that needs attention.

6. Let the engine run

  • If the vehicle starts, keep the engine running for about five minutes.
  • After five minutes switch off the booster and allow the engine to run for a further five to ten minutes.

7. Turn off and disconnect

  • Turn off the engine.
  • Take out the leads in the reverse order to how you placed them on (first disconnect the black lead, then the red lead).

8. Restart your vehicle

  • Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts up again.

What to do after you’ve jump started your vehicle

If you’ve managed to jump start your vehicle, the engine will need to recharge again fully.

Charge the engine by driving normally (not in stop-start traffic) for at least thirty minutes. You can also use a portable vehicle battery charger to top up the charger on your battery.

How often should you change a vehicle battery?

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years but you should only consider changing a vehicle battery when it’s showing signs of worsening.

If the battery’s more than five years old and seems like it’s struggling to start the car, get if checked out. It’s better to be safe than sorry-it’ll be worse if it’s a roadside emergency or on a chilly morning when you’re already late for work.

  • Do not park your car in the sun! Due to evaporation from the sun, this can cause your vehicles fuel level to gradually decrease.
  • Keep your engine healthy. It is said that engine care can significantly boost your gas mileage and reduce fuel consumption, however, if for example something like a spark plug misfire happens to your vehicle, this can increase fuel consumption by 30%

  • Do not slam the brakes! When you unnecessarily slam the brakes, you waste energy and use up extra fuel. Always bear in mind that repeated braking uses up energy.

Winter can be a challenging time for vehicle owners. The colder the weather and the heavier the rain, can cause problems for tyres, engines, and other functionalities. You can ride your car smoothly and safely in the winter months. Here are some tips to maintain your car during winter.

  • Is your battery fully juiced?
    Winter puts a lot of stress on your battery if you park your car outdoors. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system. Repair shops don’t usually charge very much to load test your battery, some car parts stores will do it for free. If you find out your battery’s going down, you can replace it at your convenience, instead of being at the point of whatever shop your dead car’s been towed to.

  • Check your parts
    To improve aerodynamics and save fuel, today’s cars are equipped with increasingly elaborate underbody panels and low-hanging front spoilers. These can be vulnerable to damage, driving over heavy floods in the winter could turn a small problem into a more expensive one by ripping off the entire panel and maybe it’s mounting hardware. So, before the ground’s too cold to lie on, look under the car, starting from front, to see if there’s anything loose flapping about. Maybe you can put it back to place. A cable tie will take care of it or even duct tape.

  • Stop or at least slow corrosion
    Vehicles resistance to corrosion has come a long way in the last few years. Give the car a good look-over (preferably after a wash) for any scratches or dings where the damage goes through the paint that is, you can see bare metal underneath. These need some paint on them soon as possible. Obviously a professional repair is most effective, but if that’s not in budget, you can effect a quick fix yourself: The most basic approach is simple to clean the area with some kind of solvent (acetone and rubbing alcohol) and apply some clear coat nail polish will do. You can even buy touch up paint of your car’s colour and it will do the job. As for stopping rust to the underbody, the best thing you can do is to keep it clean with regularly washing. You can also use Fluid Film and spray a few cans on the metal bits of your underbody.

  • Wax the lights
    It’s a little detail, but in winters gloom, every head light cleaned is going to improve your safety. Here’s an easy two-minute idea: Make sure the headlights are clean of dirt, then rub car wax (any type will do) on the lens, let it dry and buff it off, repeat. Also do the taillights. The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an ice coat when you are driving in the morning and evening, it will make it easier to remove it if it does.

Also keep in mind to check your tyre pressure weekly, keep your fuel tank half full and protect your wind shield wipers.

  • Keep jumper cables on hand – You never know when you will need these! So, it’s best you keep them in your car and not laying around in your garage.
  • Fuel Up – Always ensure your gas is at least at the halfway mark because if your gas is close to being empty, this makes it susceptible to condensation which will prevent your car from starting.
  • Check your tires – An underinflated tire is prone to a blowout, which is a tear in the tire that results in rapid air loss. On the positive side, having tires adequately inflated will minimize your trips to the fuel station.
  • Windscreen Check – Make sure your current wipers aren’t streaking your windshield! Wiper blades being replaced is the difference between safe visibility and a possible accident, all because you were not able to see through the vehicle windshield.
