What is Car Maintenance?

October 10, 2023 By Rokkit

Proper car maintenance can help improve your vehicle’s performance, fuel economy, safety, and resale value. It can also help to reduce harmful emissions and protect the environment.

Why is Car Maintenance Important?

Car maintenance is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it can help prevent costly repairs and breakdowns. When you regularly maintain your vehicle, you can identify and fix potential problems before they cause considerable damage. As a result, this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

What are the Most Important Car Maintenance Tasks?

The importance of car maintenance tasks varies depending on the make and model of your vehicle. However, there are some general tasks that all car owners should perform regularly. These include:

  • Oil changes: Oil is essential for keeping your engine running smoothly and preventing wear and tear. It is important to change your oil regularly, according to your manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Tyre rotations: Tyre rotations help ensure that your tyres wear evenly. This rotation subsequently extends their lifespan and improves your vehicle’s handling. Rotate your tyres every 8,000 to 10,000 kilometres.
  • Brake inspections: It is crucial to prioritise brake safety by scheduling regular checks with a qualified mechanic.
  • Air filter replacement: The air filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the engine and should be replaced every 19,000 to 24,000 kilometres.
  • Fluid checks: Regularly check coolant, windscreen wiper and power steering fluid.

How to Keep Up with Schedule

The most effective method to ensure proper car maintenance is following the manufacturer’s recommendations. This schedule outlines the frequency of essential vehicle maintenance tasks. You can locate your vehicle’s maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual.

In addition to following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, there are a few other things you can do to keep up with vehicle maintenance:

  • Be proactive: Be proactive and take your vehicle in for regular maintenance. Do not wait until there is a problem.
  • Choose a qualified mechanic: When you need to have your vehicle serviced, choose a qualified mechanic who works with your car’s make and model.
  • Keep records: Record and track your vehicle’s maintenance work to stay on top of your maintenance schedule and identify potential problems early on.

Tips on What to Do When Your Engine Overheats

March 2, 2023 By Rokkit

Why Do Engines Overheat?

There are many reasons why an engine can overheat. Something can go wrong with the cooling system, causing heat to not escape from the engine.

What to Do When Your Engine Overheats - checking heat
Technician checking heat levels

The source of the problem could be a cooling system leak, faulty radiator fan, broken water pump, or clogged coolant hose. Despite the prevalent issue from the source, an overheating engine is repairable.

Here are some tips from CMH Mahindra Pinetown on what to do when your engine overheats:

Kill the Aircon and Crank the Heat

Immediately switch off the air conditioner to ease the strain on the engine.

Then, turn the dial to great heat to pull heat away from the engine to keep it from overheating until it is safe to pull over to the side. You may get stressed and feel it is the end of the world, but waiting a few minutes is nothing compared to the high cost of engine repairs. Check around and ascertain that you pull over in a safe spot.

Find a Safe Place to Pull Over

After you have pulled over, you can switch off the vehicle. Allow the engine to cool off for approximately 15 minutes. Monitor the temperature during this period and resume your journey when the motor reverts to normal.

You can devise a plan and decide what to do to check it out. You can call someone to assist you at this time of need-a friend, roadside assistance or a mechanic.

Check and Add Coolant

Top up your coolant to avoid overheating and damage to your engine. If the coolant hose is clogged, then this will not help.

Look for the source of the problem. It could be the radiator or water pump. Refer to the manual to locate the coolant reservoir tank and how to put the coolant.

Restart the Engine

Restart your vehicle and drive to CMH Mahindra Pinetown for inspection. Keep your focus on the temperature gauge to monitor the heat while you are on your way to us.

What to do When your Engine Overheats

Don’t Panic

You can keep cool even though your engine is not. You can avoid traffic and use your brakes very harshly when pulling over.

Bring your Car to a Halt

Running while being overheated is a costly mistake that could set you back a couple of rands. Moreover, you might not make it to your intended destination.

Avoid Opening the Bonnet Instantly

Once you have stopped on the side, wait for the engine is cooled down before opening the bonnet. You can get burnt, injured and cause risks to yourself if you open the bonnet while the engine spurts out smoke.

You will have to be very patient during this period. The temperature gauge must settle then you can open the bonnet.

Do Not Let the Issue Linger

The issue will not self-mend or disappear by simply topping up the coolant. Address it with the seriousness it needs to avoid being without a vehicle. Save your engine while you can.

How to Prevent an Engine Overheat

To prevent an engine from overheating, you should flush the coolant regularly to maintain your radiator.

January 24, 2023 By Rokkit

Frequently checking all warning lights is vital to every motorist’s maintenance regime.

CMH Mahindra Pinetown has compiled a list to highlight the importance of paying attention to warning lights.

Importance of Checking Warning Lights

Importance of checking warning lights and what car dashboard lights mean

Your car dashboard lights serve as a performance indicator and warming for possible malfunction. Each light signals a unique problem, so it’s essential to take note of a dashboard light and tackle repairs before it becomes a costly (or dangerous) problem.

Standard warning lights you should know

Here are some standard dashboard warning lights and problems that CMH Mahindra Pinetown came across:

Engine light

The check engine light turns on if your car is experiencing engine problems. Engine issues can relate to high engine temperature (overheated engine), fault wires, or even a catalytic converter problem. Engine problems can cause expensive and irreparable damage if not promptly addressed.

Brake light

The brake light indicates when there is a problem with your braking system, such as having low brake fluid or your emergency brake is still engaged while driving. It’s crucial to check your brake pads if this light or your automatic braking system (ABS) as failure can cause serious issues.

Oil pressure

Your car’s oil pressure warning light will go off when there are low oil levels, low pressure or if your oil levels are too hot. Oil helps with engine lubrication, and failure to maintain and check your oil levels can lead to severe engine damage.

The best way to properly take care of issues is to have regular maintenance and repair work done as soon as possible to prevent damage. The experts at CMH Mahindra Pinetown workshop can help you with maintenance and repair for any issue that your car experiences in its lifetime.

Car Maintenance Tips for Winter

August 10, 2021 By Rokkit

Winter can be a challenging time for vehicle owners. The colder the weather and the heavier the rain, can cause problems for tyres, engines, and other functionalities. You can ride your car smoothly and safely in the winter months. Here are some tips to maintain your car during winter.

    Vehicle Maintenance Battery Check
  • Is your battery fully juiced?
Winter puts a lot of stress on your battery if you park your car outdoors. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system. Repair shops don’t usually charge very much to load test your battery, some car parts stores will do it for free. If you find out your battery’s going down, you can replace it at your convenience, instead of being at the point of whatever shop your dead car’s been towed to.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Engine Check
  • Check your parts
To improve aerodynamics and save fuel, today’s cars are equipped with increasingly elaborate underbody panels and low-hanging front spoilers. These can be vulnerable to damage, driving over heavy floods in the winter could turn a small problem into a more expensive one by ripping off the entire panel and maybe it’s mounting hardware. So, before the ground’s too cold to lie on, look under the car, starting from front, to see if there’s anything loose flapping about. Maybe you can put it back to place. A cable tie will take care of it or even duct tape.
  • Exterior
  • Stop or at least slow corrosion
Vehicles resistance to corrosion has come a long way in the last few years. Give the car a good look-over (preferably after a wash) for any scratches or dings where the damage goes through the paint that is, you can see bare metal underneath. These need some paint on them soon as possible. Obviously a professional repair is most effective, but if that’s not in budget, you can effect a quick fix yourself: The most basic approach is simple to clean the area with some kind of solvent (acetone and rubbing alcohol) and apply some clear coat nail polish will do. You can even buy touch up paint of your car’s colour and it will do the job. As for stopping rust to the underbody, the best thing you can do is to keep it clean with regularly washing. You can also use Fluid Film and spray a few cans on the metal bits of your underbody.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Headlight Check
  • Wax the lights
It’s a little detail, but in winters gloom, every head light cleaned is going to improve your safety. Here’s an easy two-minute idea: Make sure the headlights are clean of dirt, then rub car wax (any type will do) on the lens, let it dry and buff it off, repeat. Also do the taillights. The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an ice coat when you are driving in the morning and evening, it will make it easier to remove it if it does.
Back Tyre Check

Also keep in mind to check your tyre pressure weekly, keep your fuel tank half full and protect your wind shield wipers.

Vehicle maintenance is important. I hope these tips were useful and helps to make your driving safe and maintain the condition of your vehicle. With winter being the season where proper vehicle maintenance is perhaps at its most crucial period.
